Women’s Basketball

I have been watching more basketball recently. Between Luka getting traded from the Mavs to the Lakers and my Rockets doing well, it’s been an interesting time as a fan. I don’t always watch on TV since sometimes it’ll be on my phone in the background, but it has been on more than usual. My 6 year old daughter E took notice.

She always asks me who I want to win usually because if it isn’t the Rockets, she is curious. I tell her and then she usually picks the team she wants to win based off of different things, such as the colors of their jerseys. But this time, she asks me why I don’t watch women’s basketball. It’s a complex question to answer because between the media not promoting it as much as men’s basketball and the availability of the games, it’s hard to put the games on tv sometimes. I know representation is very important and E needs to know that women are capable of amazing things, so I know we should be watching more of it.

I told her that we will watch lots of women’s basketball also, but unfortunately the professionals don’t play right now. Again, complex topic. E of course asks why and I said women usually play in the summertime (when men’s basketball is taking a break). I asked her if she remembers Caitlin Clark and watching some of her games last year. She vaguely remembered and I told her we will be watching lots of her when we get the chance. E was excited and she then ran up the stairs to go play. I hope through seeing women do amazing things, E will strive to do her best at whatever she chooses to do. I also wanted to buy a $45 “So Win” Nike shirt that had all these amazing women athletes on it so E can see greatness when I’m wearing it, but they are still quite expensive and also sold out in my size. Maybe I’ll get it one day, but until then, we will watch lots of women’s basketball.
