Wobble Down the Hill
My 4 year old son goes on the morning walk when I drop off my 5 year old daughter for kindergarten. It’s a nice walk that I enjoy each morning and I’m glad when my son wants to come along because he’s getting extra exercise (and extra energy out). It’s a fun time and he likes to ride his bike there and back a lot.
On the way back one morning, he rode his bike down a hill and wobbled his wheels on purpose all the way down. He climbed back up the hill and said he wanted to do it again. I warned him to not wobble his wheel because he could end up falling down when going that fast down the hill. The wheels needed to be pointed straight down and he should be ready to stop.
Of course he doesn’t listen and takes off down the hill again. He wobbles his wheels because it’s fun zigzagging quickly down the hill for him. Sure enough, he falls down and eats it into the ground. He’s laying there and I walk by to tell him that’s why he shouldn’t wobble his wheels. He looked up at me and just got back up without crying or whining. Now he understood through the consequence and hopefully learning things the hard way will solidify the lesson in his brain. At least he wasn’t hurt too badly and we ended up getting home shortly afterwards with no more wobbly wheels.
