Marketing is Important

When my kids were playing in their imaginary bakery, they were having too much fun, but a thought did cross their mind about how people would discover their awesome bakery? They wanted to share their bakery with the world and the neighbors needed to know first. I looked at my 5 year old daughter and said she needed to do some marketing because marketing of important! She looks back at me and asked me what any 5 year old would ask - what is marketing?

I told her that marketing is when people use commercials, posters, and other ways to try and let you know about their business. Sometimes it’s to sell you food, clothes, cars, or all sorts of things. My daughter looks back at me and thinks through this for a few seconds. I could tell she is starting to digest the information I just told her and then she surprises me. She said she had the best idea ever - she was going to cut up her baked goods into much smaller pieces and give them out as samples. That was her marketing.

As I sat there, I was speechless for a few seconds. I don’t quite understand how she came up with that, but that was really good! It is a marketing strategy to actually give out samples of your product to entice others to purchase it. She somehow digested the information and came up with her strategy in a span of a few minutes. When I mentioned this to my wife, she came up with the exact reason that my daughter knew samples worked - she saw it at Costco recently got to sample a few things (and liked it!). It was great that my daughter put those situations together and maybe she is a natural marketer at heart!
