My 6 year old daughter E has been home sick for a few days this week. Both days she missed school, she didn’t sleep well at night and woke up not feeling well, but after breakfast, she ended up feeling fine the rest of the day. On the second day, my wife let her watch a bit of YouTube on the TV to do some exercises and learn something educational.

E was happily doing the exercises that were being demonstrated and getting her wiggles out. Then she watched some educational content. This all lasted for about 30-45 minutes and then it was time to turn off the TV. We all went upstairs to have some playtime and E set up an art corner for her to draw.

I was watching baby L and he was happily playing in a corner of the playroom when E came over. She held up something for me to read and I was surprised by what I saw. She ended up writing a sign that said to come to her salon…and to like and subscribe. Less than an hour of YouTube and it was already noticed by her that the phrase is peppered in videos so people can pay attention to the creator.

I gave her a hug and laughed, but it also made me realize that kids pick up on so many things to at we are unaware of us parents. E never gets to watch YouTube and the little that she did that day, it was already picked up that everyone should like and subscribe to the videos a creator makes. If we are giving kids the right kinds of lessons, they will absorb it and use that knowledge in a positive way. This was a reminder to me that as parents, we need to be more careful about what kids are exposed to (even the small amounts of certain things they come across). I’ll do a better job of trying to shield some of those things that aren’t so great, but I will like and subscribe to anything E is doing because I love her.
