Flak Seeds in Cereal?
I love cereal in the morning. It’s such a quick and easy breakfast with minimal cleanup and no cooking involved (usually!). I have migrated from the sugary Frosted Flakes and Fruity Pebbles of my childhood to much “healthier” cereal, but I have started to add different things into my cereal, such as flak seeds.
My kids didn’t enjoy flak seeds in the waffles I make, so I stopped putting them in the waffles. They saw me putting flak seeds in my cereal and to my surprise, my 3 year old son asked me to put it in his cereal also. He is pickier relatively more often than my 5 year old daughter (even though he is really good with eating a variety of things), so he would not have been the kid that I thought would try it. I poured some in his cereal and he actually asked for almonds, cashews, and sunflower seeds also to mimic what I was doing. I asked my daughter if she wanted any of those ingredients as well and she opted for almonds and cashews. We then at our cereal for breakfast and since that day, we have eating cereal in almost the same way every day. It makes me really happy that my kids are willing to try different things and also that my son is venturing out to eat flak seeds on his own accord.
I sometimes wonder whether it is genetics that push people to be a certain way and although I think I lean more this way nowadays vs. the nature side of things (in having your environment influence you to being a certain way), this one is clearly a nature type of situation for the most part. My kids observed me eating flak seeds and putting all sorts of stuff in my cereal and it reminds me that they are always watching and learning…the good and the bad. You could argue that it is also genetic that my kids would try things that I like, but then I would ask what 3 and 5 year old kids like this vs. Frosted Flakes. I rest my case your honor!
