Flax Seed…Waffles?

Growing up, my Mom always emphasized health - and something that I also emphasize with my kids. I remember she would say how flax seeds were super healthy, but it wasn’t until recently that my wife started to buy them to incorporate into our diets more often. I tried to put them in a lot of different things for myself. I then tried to figure out how to get my kids to eat it.

One morning, I snuck some flax seeds in the waffles we make. I didn’t think flax seeds had much flavor, but apparently my kids could taste that something was a bit different in the waffles that morning. I was surprised because to me, they were almost flavorless (and most likely due to me inhaling breakfast). My 5 year old daughter said the waffles were yucky and started to boycott them after eating the first waffle. I then took a waffle and chewed it carefully…and then I could taste the flax seed also. Fail.

I think I adjusted things too drastically according to my own perception. I wanted the kids to eat something a bit healthier and assumed that they would think the small seeds were flavorless like I did. Maybe their palettes are way more refined than mine because they did not like flax seeds at all. Next time, I need to be more subtle about changing any receipts by snaking in extra ingredients. Milled flax seeds perhaps would be the right move here!
