First Winter Break
My 6 year old daughter E has finished up her kindergarten class for the year. She woke up this morning with a bittersweet feeling. The first thing she said when she woke up was that she will miss school. Of course I was groggy so I told her she wasn’t going to miss school because we aren’t late. And of course that’s not what she meant.
E loves school so much. She is really enjoying her friends, the huge playground, the learning, and her teachers. Even though she knew winter break was here, she didn’t want kindergarten to end for the year. I remember I loved going to elementary school also, but I also remember that I loved not going to school more. My daughter is a different breed and probably more like my wife in this aspect. Even though the first part of the year was bumpy with E getting sick quite a bit and also having to visit the doctors a bunch, once we hit a rhythm, she didn’t want the rhythm of school to end.
They had a cookie decorating party and lots of treats today, which only added to the fun. She also gave her teachers some presents and was really excited to do that. After the day was done, I was there waiting with the baby for her to come out. We made our usual walk home and she told me all about her day and I also noticed she had been influencing other kids to dig work homes since there were holes and branches/leaves covering the holes all over the playground.
E was still telling me she was sad there was no kindergarten all afternoon and even at night after story time. I’m sure she will have an awesome time at home though and we have lots to do - like practicing her jazz routine, riding bikes and scooters, and doing some reading and math. She will also have lots of time with her cousins, which she always loves. I think it’ll be a good winter break and I’m sure once that’s over, she won’t want that to end either.
