Chaperone Time

My 5 year old daughter asked me yesterday whether I could go on a field trip with their class to the farm. She was so excited about the possibility of me going with their class as a chaperone and almost tackled me to ask after I went to pick her up after daycare. Of course I had to ask her teachers since she was so excited and luckily there was room for parent volunteers. I also needed to ask my wife whether she would be fine with watching our newborn after another sleepless night (that’s the usual) and not getting a break to sleep since I wouldn’t be able to take the baby like I usually do. Surprisingly, she said yes immediately and everything was lined up.

I ended up going to the field trip today and the first thing I got when I saw the class at the farm was a huge hug from my daughter. She had the biggest smile on her face and I was very grateful that I had the time (and approvals!) to go. Instead of being partners with one of her friends, so wanted to be my partner and sat near me while holding my hand during the presentations. Then we were off to see animals!

We met a baby lamb, a 1 year old sheep, a baby chick, and a grown chicken. We also saw some cows, bunnies, and a few wasps! My daughter was holding my hand almost the entire time and was so excited to pet all of the animals. They also got to plant a pea seed in the ground to see if it’ll grow (but from the looks of it, it probably wouldn’t based on the dirt…one can hope though!). Before leaving the farm, there was a short play session on the playground to get some wiggles out before the bus ride back to daycare and it was just a great day.

When we were leaving, my daughter almost had tears and said she would miss me. She didn’t want me to leave (even though I would see her in a few short hours for daycare pickup) and so I carried her to the bus to get in some extra cuddle time. As I was driving away after they all got on the bus, I was thinking about how awesome it was that my daughter wanted me to go to her field trip. It won’t be long before I’m not wanted around her and her friends because it isn’t cool to have your parents around, so I’m trying to soak this all up while I can!
