Wicked - The Abridged Version
My 5 year old daughter has been asking questions about Wicked ever since my wife and I went to see it in theaters. Even though she loves stories, Wicked would scare her so badly if she saw it right now she was even scared of Inside Out 2 when we went to go see it in theaters a while ago because the characters were new (like anxiety). It didn’t stop her from asking a million questions about Wicked though because she saw Glinda and I’m sure she was enthralled with her pinkness.
She was asking about Wicked again on the way to dance this week because she heard the album playing in the car (thanks to my wife for that one). This time, my daughter wanted me to tell the whole story from the beginning to the end I only have seen the movie, so I retold the abridged version to my daughter. I was emphasizing how Elphaba was always misunderstood and mistreated, but she was actually very kind and very powerful. Luckily, Glinda turned out to be a friend and even though my daughter loves princesses and pink, she liked Elphaba better.
On the way home from dance, she wanted to talk about Wicked some more. She said her and Elphaba were the same. I didn’t know which way this would go - was it because she was powerful, had glasses, misunderstood, kind, or even green? My daughter continued and said they both loved animals and wanted to care for them. She also said she could understand when animals feel sad or happy or scared. She can talk to them. I love how she truly cares about animals and that’s evident in her adopting a pet worm named Squirmy. I’m sure she will want to watch Wicked when she grows up and then we can continue talking about this in a lot more depth. For now, Elphaba and her love animals and Glinda is #2 because she is nice and loves pink.
