Sour Grapes
During story time one evening, my kids were in a great mood (after a lot of tantrums) and we were early for bedtime (because clearly tantrums were from being tired). My 5 year old daughter had her first book fair and we had bought a lot of books for her. Safe to say she was very excited to read all the books. My 4 year old son was too.
We had been reading The Sour Grape, which is a book about having a better attitude when things don’t go your way. I like the book series where different types of food play a role and teach the kids a lesson. The writing is really silly, they use some big words (that give me the opportunity to teach my kids new things), and the story ends with a good lesson to learn in life.
We had read that book a few times and usually my daughter picks that book as her story time choice. That night, my son picked it instead and I try to explain small parts to them in more detail, especially if we aren’t rushing to go to sleep. My son stopped on the part where the grapes were getting ready and asked me why they did that. I told him it was because they needed to get ready in the morning just like we did - they were just pretending to be people. He said grapes don’t do that, which is a true statement. He was thinking very literally and noticed the toilet in the restroom where the one grape was getting ready. Looking closely at the toilet, he asked me why the grapes had a toilet…do they just squeeze their juice in there?
I couldn’t stop laughing for a while. I was just picturing the thought process my son was having where he was thinking about squeezing grapes and figuring out what came out. He was right that juice would come out and maybe at the right time of day, some seeds would too! I definitely appreciate all the little thoughts and comments that come out of my kids while they are figuring out how the world works. It keeps me on my toes and once in a while, it also is super amusing!
