Snow Days

As a kid, I loved snow days. I rarely experienced them, but when it happened, it was like magic. As an adult, snow days are anything but magic. Routines are disrupted and kids are thrown into chaos (at times). We had to deal with a handful of them recently and it has been challenging with the 3 kiddos.

The first few days were fine. We made the older two kids go outside and they could entertain themselves for quite some time. They would go out and play in the snow during the mornings and then have an afternoon session. When I could get away from the baby, I would join my two older kids outside for some snow fun.

I built sculptures for a snow museum with my 6 year old daughter E and plowed the snow with my 4 year old son C. We then built a bunch of snowmen and gave them faces and hats. Even baby L got to see his first snowfall and get into it a bit. It was fun, but the snow sessions created lots of extra laundry and eventually wore off in novelty.

Over the next few snow days, it was more survival than anything. Events were cancelled or pushed back and it was hard to get in a rhythm. Because of the constant changes, my kids have been extra cranky (and so have I at times). The hard part of dealing with three kids is that we are constantly playing zone defense instead of man to man, but seeing my baby boy L in the snow for the first time was priceless. So I guess it’s worth it.
