Poster Work

My 4 year old son C needed to prepare a poster for his daycare. The poster was going to be all about him and he was super excited to put it together. I am equally excited because I just love to see what they’ll come up with. I tend not to direct too much since I want them to figure out the layout and colors. It should be by them.

My wife and I gathered some pictures and she also printed some Pokemon pages for C to color. He enlisted his older sister E to help with the coloring and cutting, so it was a good activity for them to work together on. It took a few days to get all the Pokemon colored and cut, but once they were finally ready, it was time to organize the layout. He put his name in large letters in the middle, put his family pictures and pictures of himself around his name, and lined the Pokemon down the bottom of the poster.

Once his masterpiece was complete, he was so proud of himself. I was proud of him because he did it by himself and also made sure to involve his sister (who originally wanted to take over the project from him because she loves artsy things). Even though he was feeling nervous about presenting it, I gave him a few pointers and told him how he should start by introducing himself with his name and then talking about his family. Once he got that introduction down, I knew he would love talking about all of us. I think acknowledging their feelings and giving them some ways to help prepare always works and C ended up doing a great job presenting his poster to his class. And it’s great he is getting exposure this early on presenting in front of others!
