New Swim Class
I have been teaching my 4 year old son C how to swim for the past few weeks. He’s made a crazy amount of progress because he spent so much time in the water with his 6 year old sister E. By the time I tried to teach him all the basics, he had the experience to pick things up fairly quickly to my surprise. By the time he could float on his back and kick around, we were notified that he had the chance to get into a new swim class at the pool.
At first I was sad because I wanted to keep teaching C how to swim. I’ve watched E with her teacher and I picked up on a few things to use. I wanted to see how quickly I could get C to start swimming using a backstroke and a freestyle stroke. Of course a swim instructor would be better, so we opted for him to start. Luckily it was at the same time as E’s swim class, so I had my 30 minutes of free time to go exercise, which I was grateful to have back.
Before his first class this week, C said he was nervous. He didn’t know what to expect from his new teacher and he also said he is more comfortable with woman teachers because most of his teachers had been women across his daycare and swim lesson experience. I reassured him that there would be no difference and they would help assess his skills and teach him what he needed to learn.
By the time the day arrived, the teacher asked me what C knew and I was proud to list out a bunch of things because he learned them so quickly. His teacher said it was time to focus on backstroke and freestyle and that’s exactly what he did. It was crazy to think that in a few weeks, he had progressed so much and he was actually learning how to swim like a big kid. It really does pass by so fast and although it does, I can’t wait until the day C can fully swim around by himself. Then the real pool fun can start!
