Math with Gummies
Treat time for us is usually after dinner. We try to give them some sweet treats if they eat their protein, carbs, veggies, and fruits. We are lucky that my kids are relatively good eaters and tackle each food group appropriately for the most part. The treats are a fine thing to have after dinner (for now).
Recently, my wife cleared out the snacks with any type of gluten so our 5 year old daughter (who we suspect has a gluten allergy/intolerance) will not accidentally eat it and get a reaction from the gluten. Since there were gummies in there, my kids wanted some again and we ended up asking them to give us reasons why they wanted the gummies and how to convince us to give it to them. They ended up giving us sweet talk by saying they’ll listen and be nice to everyone. Good enough.
We ended up also doing some math with the gummies. My daughter wanted 4 Lifesaver gummies and a gummy bear while my 4 year old son wanted 4 gummy bears and 1 Lifesaver gummy. We were asking them math problems to see whether they would know how many gummies they had by adding each type together.
They ended up answering the questions easily and I think it’s because they are doing some math apps on the iPad while we have been teaching them math in spurts through stories and conversations. It was also such a great way to visualize the math problems while motivating them to count and eat the treats. It’s a win-win in my book!
