Little Surprises

My kids are pretty thoughtful when they aren’t terrorizing me or my wife. They often think about thoughtful gestures to do and to see if it helped make our day a bit better. I am grateful that there are those moments that counterbalance the craziness that is three young kids and a dog that is full of energy.

One morning when I was getting everyone ready for a weekend breakfast, my 5 year old daughter asks if I saw her little surprise. I had no idea what I could be since the day had just started. Sometimes she would draw a nice picture the night before and place it somewhere she knew I would be the next day, but I didn’t see anything during the morning routine. I told her I didn’t and she asked me to look harder.

I glanced around quickly and didn’t see anything still, so I needed some help. She told me to look at the bed I slept in and I went into the room to take a peek. My daughter made the bed! Granted, I am a very structured sleeper that doesn’t move around much at night. In the morning, I usually get up by folding one corner of the sheets downwards like I’m folding a paper airplane, so she ended up dragging that corner back up and smoothing out the sheets. Even though it took only a few short minutes of her time, my daughter still did it and it’s definitely the thought that counts!

I thanked her for the little surprise and was glad she thought to do it. I’m also glad she decided to do it on the weekend (and not on a morning we are running late for daycare!). She hasn’t made my bed since that day, but at least I know she is capable of doing it!
