Bedtime Reading
I mentioned a few times that I love doing the bedtime reading for my two older kids E and C (on most days). It’s a great way to bond, teach, and talk. However, tonight was different. My newly minted 6 year old E wanted to read one of the short Pinkalicious phonics books I got her for her birthday. And she wanted to read it to me and C.
C wasn’t really having any of it since he wanted me to read it quickly. He likes the pace of reading to sound like the audiobooks him and E listen to. Sounding out all the words isn’t going to sound like an audiobook at first, but I didn’t want to douse the enthusiasm E was showing towards reading. She read Book 1 where sight words were the focus. Her kindergarten class has been practicing sight words and all kids of reading (don’t get me started on this though because I can’t believe they have homework + reading + real math already!).
E read the whole book by herself and even patiently asked for help on some of the longer words. At the end, she was so proud of herself for reading the book to us and I was really proud of her for doing that too. It was the first time I was read a book at night during bedtime reading and even though C didn’t really grasp how important this moment was, I’m sure he will look back and understand when he is older. Hopefully E can start doing some books during bedtime reading and I can get a small break between books. Maybe enough to squeeze in a short cat nap!
